There are several options available on the current market. You can purchase a realistic photo background from most outlets which help resemble natural surroundings however one of the most popular options is to pain the outside of the back of the tank using a light blue or black depending on the depth/appearance you are wanting to achieve. make sure non water based paint is used otherwise repainting it may be a nightmare.
There are also decorative backgrounds available in 3d which can look quite appealing at the back of the tank. These are available in a choice of materials and colours.
