Would it be beneficial to reduce the specific gravity of aquarium water from 1.025 to 1.021?

Date Published - 21st August 2012 - Published by - iQuatics Ltd

Yes. The higher the concentration of salts in the water the harder the fish have to work to rid themselves of it owing to the increased intake of saltwater. If the salinity is lowered the metabolism of the fish is reduced with a consequent lowering of stress. Complete the task over a period of several weeks, allowing the metabolism of the fish to adjust slowly. Nearly all those species kept by the marine aquarist would be unhappy at a specific gravity of less than 1.018, or more than 1.028; 1.021 has proved to be a satisfactory universal level.
